RAND seeks a highly motivated research assistant to work with our research staff on a number of China and Korea related projects in a variety of areas, with an emphasis on national security issues. Research assistants work directly with and under the guidance of RAND researchers. Responsibilities will involve collection of information in Chinese and English using public and proprietary sources; preliminary reduction and analysis of this information; and, over time, preparation of draft documents and presentations.
Candidates must have advanced Mandarin reading skills, demonstrated on a RAND-sponsored language test.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) is required. Knowledge of quantitative applications (SAS, SPSS, STATA, etc.) or programming skills (C++, R, Java, SQL etc.) is desired.
Preference given to those applicants that hold an active US government security clearance. Those without security clearances should be eligible for a clearance, which requires US citizenship, and willing to go through the security clearance process.
This position is for Bachelors level applicants only. Masters level applicants should look for Defense Analyst positions . Bachelor’s degree in China/Asian Studies, Public Policy, Economics, International Relations or a related degree along with advanced Mandarin language skills.

Program Manager, Chinese Overseas Flagship Program at American Councils for International Education – Washington, DC
PAY BAND: 5 Manager
Funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), the Chinese Overseas Flagship Program is designed to train superior speakers of Chinese through intensive overseas study and practical, professional experience. The Program Manager oversees two American Councils Chinese Overseas Flagship Programs: one, located at Beijing Union University, provides intensive, yearlong Chinese language instruction, internships, cultural activities, and structured opportunities for students to maximize their immersion in the host country culture. The second, based in Nanjing, prepares and supports students as they participate in full-time, professional internships in their fields of interest; it is administered in collaboration with Brigham Young University.
The Program Manager is responsible for the program’s daily administration, overall quality, direction, and financial oversight. He/she supervises staff abroad and in the U.S. to recruit, select, and support approximately 50-75 program participants each academic year.
The Program Manager ensures the provision of outstanding student support abroad, oversees the academic program, responds to student concerns, and collaborates with American Councils senior staff, institutional partners, and funders to maximize learning outcomes. Journal of American-East Asian Relations Frank Gibney Award Deadline Extended
The deadline for the Journal of American-East Asian Relations Frank Gibney Award has been extended to February 1, 2018. The editors give the award to an essay in the field of American-East Asian relations written by a graduate student based on coursework and submitted by his or her supervisor.
The award honors the life and goals of Frank Gibney (1924–2006), an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Journal. Gibney worked for more than fifty years to educate the peoples on both sides of the Pacific about each other. He began his study of Japan as a military intelligence officer during World War II and the Occupation of Japan, then became a correspondent and editor at Time, Life, and Newsweek magazines before joining Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1966 to develop its presence in Asia. Gibney wrote or edited more than a dozen books on Japan and Asia. In 1979, Gibney co-founded the Pacific Basin Institute, now at Pomona College, Claremont California, to promote public understanding through lectures, conferences, and publications. He edited the Library of Japan series, which commissioned and translated works of Japanese fiction and nonfiction.
