United to SponsorTravel for Students, Educators, Administrators
WASHINGTON, DC – (September 29, 2016) – The US-China Strong Foundation, a global nonprofit committed to strengthening US-China relations, today announced its partnership with United Airlines to advance travel and study opportunities for students, educators and administrators seeking to gain a greater understanding of Chinese language and culture.
“We’re honored to work with United Airlines, the carrier offering the world’s most comprehensive global route network, to enhance cross-cultural understanding and study abroad between the United States and China,” said Carola McGiffert, CEO of US-China Strong. “Bringing our people closer together – through travel, education, work and more – will serve to strengthen the US-China relationship. We look forward to seeing more young Americans flying United to and from China to support this essential bond between two of the world’s most powerful nations.”
The two-year partnership includes sponsored travel for students and other stakeholders, and designates United as US-China Strong’s preferred airline travel partner.
Today, approximately 25,000 Americans study abroad in China annually and just 200,000 American K-12 students are learning Mandarin – compared to more than 300,000 Chinese studying on US campuses in 2015 and over 300 million Chinese students currently learning English. US-China Strong aims to bolster US-China ties, study abroad and Mandarin language learning in the US with its three core initiatives: 1 Million Strong, which increases Mandarin language learning in the US; 100,000 Strong, which grows and diversifies study abroad to China; and the US-China Alumni Network, which fosters commitment to US-China relations through professional development and engagement opportunities.
“This November, United will commemorate three decades of service linking the US and China – service that now includes more nonstop flights to more cities throughout China than any other US airline,” said Steve Morrissey, the company’s vice president of regulatory and policy. “We take great pride in our long-standing commitment to serving customers on both sides of the Pacific, and to creating greater cultural and commercial opportunities between our two great nations.”
United offers nonstop service to five cities across mainland China from the US, including Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Xi’an. United is also a founding member of Star Alliance, the world’s largest and most comprehensive airline alliance, whose other members include Air China.
