One Year after Initiative’s Launch, Partners to Help Spur Mandarin Language Learning in US
WASHINGTON, DC – (September 26, 2016) – On the anniversary of its 1 Million Strong initiative, the US-China Strong Foundation, a global nonprofit committed to strengthening US-China relations, announced its new 1 Million Strong implementation partners who will help guide the initiative’s growth.
Announced in September 2015 by Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping during the Chinese leader’s official state visit to the US, 1 Million Strong looks to create a pipeline of China-savvy leaders and employees in the US. The initiative calls for a five-fold increase from current numbers: today, approximately 200,000 US K-12 students are learning Mandarin, while there are more than 300 million English language learners in China.
“We’re proud to collaborate with these distinguished institutions and organizations as they help us expand 1 Million Strong across the country,” said Carola McGiffert, CEO of US-China Strong. “With their expertise, we’ll be even better equipped to foster a greater understanding of Chinese culture, language and history – and of the US-China relationship – among American students. We look forward to working with our implementation partners to make Mandarin language learning a reality for so many young people across the country, and to invest in a new generation of leaders who will have the knowledge and skills to engage with China.”
US-China Strong’s implementation partners for 1 Million Strong are:
- Better Chinese
- National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL)
- American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
- Teacher training
- University of Maryland
- University of Washington
- NYU Steinhardt
- Technology platform
- Mandarin Matrix
- University of Oregon’s Center for Applied Second Language Studies
1 Million Strong’s curriculum implementation partners will develop and promote nationally-available Mandarin language curriculum models; teacher training partners will recruit and certify roughly 5,000 new Mandarin teachers; and technology platform partners will develop and leverage technology to improve and increase access to Mandarin language classes, particularly in underserved communities.
