It’s been one year since the US-China Strong Foundation launched 1 Million Strong, our Mandarin language learning initiative that seeks to grow to one million the number of US K-12 students learning Mandarin by 2020. And what a year it’s been!
Since Presidents Obama and Xi announced 1 Million Strong during President Xi’s official state visit last September, we’ve continued to make steady progress toward our goal. I’m especially excited to reveal our 1 Million Strong implementation partners, who will contribute in three key areas to help us reach 1 Million Strong – curriculum, teacher training and technology platforms.
Introducing our 1 Million Strong implementation partners:
- Better Chinese
- National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL)
- American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
- University of Maryland
- University of Washington
- NYU Steinhardt
- Mandarin Matrix
- University of Oregon’s Center for Applied Second Language Studies
Our curriculum implementation partners will assist in developing and expanding Mandarin language curriculum models across the country; teacher training partners, in recruiting and certifying approximately 5,000 new Mandarin teachers; and technology platform partners, in leveraging technology to improve and increase access to Mandarin language classes, particularly in underserved communities.
On behalf of US-China Strong, I’m so thankful to our 1 Million Strong implementation partners – and to all of our partners and supporters. I can’t wait to see our new partners in action and on the ground working to expand Mandarin language learning and to strengthen US-China ties.
Thanks, as always, for your support.
